International recognition for Northern Energy Innovation

When your work helps improve power systems across Canada’s north, people notice. Dr. Michael Ross has been selected to join an international organization of power system experts with CIGRE Canada. It is no surprise he landed this prestigious position with the work he and his team are doing in all three territories.

Dr. Ross runs the Northern Energy Innovation program at YukonU and often employs up to 15 staff, including YukonU students. This program supports northern communities and their utilities to improve the stability of their electrical power systems and incorporate sustainable energy sources, like wind, solar, and thermal energy storage when possible. It was his team that is helping Old Crow and Beaver Creek incorporate solar power into their existing power system. They have also supported seven other communities across Canada. 

Dr Ross was selected to be the Canadian representative for the international Study Committee responsible for Active Distribution Systems and Distributed Energy Resources. 

Dr. Ross is YukonU’s Research Chair in Northern Energy Innovation. His research is funded and directed by power companies across northern Canada (ATCO Electric, Yukon Energy, Qulliq Energy, and Northwest Territories Power Corporation) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
