Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program adds new programs to eligibility list
Whitehorse, Yukon — Yukon University is pleased to reflect on the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness (CSLF) Program changes, and the opportunities it presents students. As of December 31, 2025, the Government of Canada expanded its Student Loan Forgiveness program to include additional health and social service professionals working in rural communities.
Under the program, the entire Yukon is considered a rural area, allowing eligible Yukon University graduates to apply for loan forgiveness while working anywhere in the territory.
Yukon University’s Funding Advisor, Matthew Pecore, notes the significance of the change for students:
“We know that taking on student loans can feel daunting. After all, no one wants to graduate with debt hanging over their head. The changes to the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program opens doors for current and prospective students to pursue education that may have otherwise felt out of reach.”
Combined with Yukon University’s competitive tuition fees, this expanded federal support creates a powerful opportunity for students to pursue meaningful careers while significantly reducing the overall cost of their education. Together, affordable tuition and loan forgiveness position Yukon University as an excellent place to study, train, and build a future in the North.
Eligible YukonU programs
Graduates working in approved fields may apply for loan forgiveness for each year they work in an eligible profession, with the amount forgiven increasing annually for up to five years. Eligible professions with programs offered at Yukon University include:
- Health Care Assistant (Certificate)
- Practical Nurse (Diploma)
- Early Learning (Diploma)
- Social Work (Degree)
- Education – Yukon Native Teacher Education Program (YNTEP) (Degree)
- Education – Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD) (Degree)
Why this matters for Yukon communities
This program not only reduces financial barriers for students, but it also supports Yukon communities by helping graduates step into essential roles in health care, education, and social services. These professions are critical to the wellbeing, resilience, and long-term sustainability of communities across the territory.
By choosing to study at Yukon University, students can gain the skills needed for in-demand careers, contribute directly to the communities they live in or move to, and graduate with less debt. It is an investment that benefits both individuals and the Yukon as a whole.
