About the Program
We are working toward developing in partnership with the University of Calgary, this single-cohort program which offers a three-year law degree offered on campus at Yukon University. Graduates will receive a Juris Doctor (JD), enabling them to practice law across the country, but the program will offer specific instruction tailored to the unique legal landscape and framework of the Yukon.
Intake for this program is anticipated to open in Fall 2026, for a Fall 2027 program start.
Background
Our community, including the Council of Yukon First Nations and local lawyers, has identified a need for access to Yukon-based and Yukon-specific legal training. This need is based on:
- Complexity of the Yukon’s specific legal framework, including Indigenous governance, final agreement implementation, and more.
- Lack of access and barriers to legal education, including high costs, lack of community supports, and systemic barriers, especially to Indigenous Yukoners.
- Strain on Yukon legal capacity, resulting in higher costs and reduced familiarity and experience due to a lack of Yukon-based and –trained lawyers.
In August 2024, the Council of Yukon First Nations passed a resolution at its General Assembly recommending the development of a law degree in the territory.
Tuition fees are expected to be similar to the typical UCalgary JD program (UCalgary tuition page); however, we are still in the planning stages of program development and will provide more tuition information once it is determined.
We understand that finances are an important part of planning your future. Check back here for updates as development of this program continues.
We understand that access to housing is key need for many prospective students. We are still in the planning stages of program development and will confirm law student eligibility for housing. In the meantime, you can learn about our housing units, rental rates, and application procedures on the Campus Housing page.
