PIPE 109 - Maintenance Heating and Ventilation

This course provides instruction in heating and ventilation system concepts, tools, and
how to perform heating and ventilation system maintenance tasks with a focus on
needs particular to Northern communities. Students will learn about different heating
systems commonly used in the North, furnace troubleshooting and basic maintenance,
best practices for wood stoves, and heat triage; HRV troubleshooting and basic
maintenance, and alternative energy sources. Emphasis will be placed on safe
practices when engaging in heating and ventilation system maintenance tasks, how to
recognize problems, and when to engage an outside professional. Students will apply
their classroom learning to housing maintenance projects in their own communities
and participate in a community of practice in which they will share their learning
experiences with fellow learners and connect housing maintenance to overall
community and personal wellness.
