ENVM 090 - Introduction to Environmental Monitoring

This nine-day field course introduces students to the discipline of Environmental Monitoring and provides students with an opportunity to develop practical and employment skills. The course introduces general field skills: note taking, site photos, GPS use and navigation. It explores safety and professionalism with the goal to improve employability, and it assesses personal suitability for and interest in the program. Western and Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing will be explored, using Northern and culturally-relevant examples.

The course is delivered in a remote camp setting and involves nine consecutive days of hands-on participation by students. Students will also complete a community engagement project. Land-based activities will be used to develop skills relevant to beginning a career in environmental monitoring and to develop skills required for remote field work.
