Yukon University has received a $5 million gift from the Mastercard Foundation as part of a nationwide initiative to support Indigenous youth. The announcement came as the Foundation revealed a total of $235 million in funding to 30 post-secondary institutions and Indigenous-led organizations across Canada.

The announcement comes as the country marks a decade of work under the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). The TRC identified education as a critical path toward reconciliation, and the Mastercard Foundation’s investment reflects this vision by recognizing the achievements and lasting impact these institutions have had in advancing educational opportunities for Indigenous youth.

On September 9, Yukon University and local First Nations dignitaries — including the Minister of Education Jeanie McLean, Victoria Fred, Chair of the YukonU Board of Governors Indigenous Advisory Circle (IAC), and IAC member Sharon Shadow — gathered at the Ayamdigut campus to celebrate this substantial gift.

Dr. Lesley Brown, President and Vice-Chancellor of Yukon University, expressed gratitude for the gift and acknowledged the significance of the recognition.

“Yukon University is honoured to be part of this national movement toward reconciliation and Indigenous self-determination through education. This generous gift from the Mastercard Foundation acknowledges the leadership of Yukon First Nations and Indigenous peoples across the North and strengthens our shared commitment to supporting Indigenous students in ways that are culturally grounded and shaped by the voices and priorities of those we serve. We are grateful to continue this work with care, respect, and purpose."

The Mastercard Foundation’s commitment underscores a broader national movement toward reconciliation and Indigenous self-determination through education. Yukon University’s inclusion in this initiative reflects the institution’s ongoing work to develop inclusive, responsive, and community centered programs that are shaped by the voices of those they serve.
