Amber Church exhibit to open Jan. 16th at the Hilltop Bistro

Amber church painting

WHITEHORSE, YT. — An exhibit of new work by Amber Church invites us to consider the threats facing iconic Canadian landscapes.

“Traversing the country with my family the past few years has heightened my awareness of both the stunning natural beauty and ecological importance of such regions and the imminent threats putting so many of these areas at severe risk be that logging practices in Haida Gwaii, glacier recession in the Rockies, fish stocks in Newfoundland, or legal battles for protection here in Yukon,” said Church.

“To bring these ideas to life, these pieces marry art, science and policy; often incorporating scientific data and research directly into the work.”

Amber Church is a mixed media artist, painter, installation artist, and designer who has called Yukon home for most of her life. She draws inspiration for her work from the natural world, social justice and environmental movements, history, mythology and fairy tales, and her imagination.

Amber Church paintingThe exhibit, True North Strong and Free, features ten mixed media pieces made up of deeply layered ink and watercolour works some augmented with polymer clay and resin to engage the viewer from different angles and to break through the natural barrier between the work and outside world. Each piece is for sale and all proceeds from sales go directly to the artist.

The Hilltop Bistro is a training facility for Yukon College Culinary Arts students. It is open Wednesday through Friday for lunch between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, January 15. Reservations are recommended and can be booked by emailing
