Four Yukon College students receive awards

WHITEHORSE – Four Yukon College students will receive a total of $2500 in financial awards this week as they prepare to enter their second year of studies.

Calvin Pembleton will receive $750 from the Rendezvous Rotary Club scholarship.  Georgette Aisaican will receive $500 from Sysco Edmonton scholarship. Chad Bustin will receive $1000 from the Prospectors and Developers Association Canada (PDAC) bursary. SuSu Zhang will receive $250 from the Rendezvous Rotary Club scholarship.

“I am thrilled. This is a validation of all the hard work I put in last year,” said Pembleton, a graduate of the Culinary Arts certificate program who is planning to continue towards the new Restaurant Operations diploma beginning in September.

The Rendezvous Rotary Club and Sysco Edmonton scholarships are awarded each year to students who display quality, leadership and vision in food service, specifically in the area of food safety.

“Choosing who gets these two awards is always a tough decision,” said Gene Batten, Culinary Arts Coordinator and Cafeteria Manager. “With a very strong and dedicated cohort of students last year making a decision on the two recipients was no easy task”.

The PDAC bursary is awarded to a Mineral Resources student who has excelled in the program and will be pursuing a second year. Bustin is currently working at the Yukon Geological Survey following his first year at the college and plans to eventually pursue a bachelor of science in geology.

"It's a really nice way to end off the first year. It's been a great program, with some really amazing classmates and professors, and I can honestly say that it's been one of the best decisions I have ever made," said Bustin.

The awards will be presented to students by Yukon College President Dr. Karen Barnes at 1.00 p.m. on Friday July 26 at Ayamdigut campus in Whitehorse.

A total of $32,000 was awarded to Yukon College students in 2012, with awards range from bursaries of $200 to a full year of tuition. Bursaries are made possible through generous donations by individuals, groups and companies directly to the College or through the Yukon College Endowment with the Yukon Foundation. The College entrance scholarship program awards one academic year of tuition to a maximum of two grade 12 students from each of Yukon’s graduating classes.
