Kaminak Gold Corp. announces Yukon College student award

WHITEHORSE - A new student award from Kaminak Gold Corporation aims to encourage more women to get involved in mining and exploration.

On Tuesday November 20th, Rob Carpenter, Kaminak Gold President and CEO, will present a $2,000 cheque to Dr. Joel Cubley, coordinator, Mineral Resources program at Yukon College.

Female students in the program are eligible to apply for awards of $1,000.

“Geology is an area I have always had an interest in, but it just seems like a guy thing,” said Jutta Hopkins-Lecheminant, a Mineral Resources student who is swapping her desk job with the City of Whitehorse for a rock hammer.

She was encouraged to enter the program after talking with a handful of women working in the industry and said she was hooked from the first field trip.

“Awards like this show that the industry is welcoming to women, and are fantastic encouragement to stay focused and do well,” said Hopkins-Lecheminant.

“Kaminak created this award with Yukon College specifically to encourage greater participation of women in the mineral exploration and mining industry,” said Rob Carpenter, President and CEO of Kaminak Gold Corporation.

“Canada is now one of the largest mining nations in the world. Programs like this are important to attract talents to the industry, where students can gain specific skills required to work in such a fast-growing industry.”

The cheque presentation will take place at the Westmark Hotel at 3.30pm on Tuesday November 20th to kick off a Yukon Women in Mining (YukonWIM) panel discussion during the Yukon Geoscience Forum.

“This initiative supports opportunities for women to thrive within an industry that is booming in their back yards and will provide them with interesting, well-paid and challenging careers,” said Anne Lewis, founder and Chair of YukonWIM.

“YukonWIM congratulates Kaminak and Yukon College on the development of this scholarship and for their efforts in attracting and advancing opportunities for women in the minerals sector.”
