College Orientation Wraps Up With Grand Prize Winnings

Zach Kuzma is one student at Yukon College who started his semester off with a school supply that he is very happy to tote around in his backpack. Thanks to Meadia Solutions from Whitehorse, Kuzma is now the new owner of an IPad. Kuzma won the IPad by participating in the orientation events. The Fall Orientation is an annual event of activities that introduces students to college facilities, services, and peers. By participating in the informative and fun activities, Kuzma heightened his chances of winning the grand prize of a laptop. Owner, Trevor Mead-Robbins was on hand to present the anticipated prize to the happy winner along with President Karen Barnes.

Activities ran from September 6-13. Student-Coordinator, Samara Robertson-Lawless says she received a good response from those who participated in the activities. Orientation is geared at getting students set up for the year with library cards, computer access, and familiarization with services to assist in student success, in a fun way. The pie-eating contest draws a lot of laughter and this year the winner, a student from Nigeria, won the gift certificate from Boston Pizza, Coca-cola, and Northland Beverages. Another popular food event is the First Nations Feast which welcomes everyone with delicious stew and bannock. Active students had a chance to win baskets from Yukon Brewery, tickets to the Yukon Roller Girls competition, and donations from Mac’s Fireweed Books, Innovators in Schools/Youth Science Adventures, Avon Rep Marylene Jules, The Phoenix Hair Studio, Yukon College Bookstore and Yukon Native Language Centre.

The Student Union carries the semester launch with a Pub night on Friday, September 16 and the grand prize of two free tickets from Air North, Yukon’s Airlines.
