Yukon College partners with Arctic Winter Games

Yukon College (YC) has entered into a partnership with the Whitehorse 2012 Arctic Winter Games (AWG). This relationship will benefit both the athletes and YC students through the many services that will be provided by Yukon College.

Yukon College will be managing a number of areas including: food services, the AWG headquarters and administration, entertainment areas for the athletes, the Poli-Clinic (doctors, physiotherapists, etc.), and a venue for the wrestling competition. “Yukon College is a valuable partner that understands the importance of an incredible youth athlete experience and the commitment required to partner with the Host Society as a key community contributor”, said Charly Kelly, VP Athlete Services, AWG.

“Yukon College is looking forward to working with the Arctic Winter Games host society to create a memorable event that benefits both the athletes and our students”, said Colleen Wirth, director of Student Services. Yukon College is currently working towards the development of a “service learning credit” that rewards students for their volunteer hours with course credits. The AWG is a great opportunity for students to be rewarded for their community spirit.

Yukon College will continue with the successful approach towards food services that was used during the 2010 Canada Winter Games. It was the first time in games history that food service wasn’t contracted to a catering company. The culinary arts students were given the opportunity to provide food to 1000’s of athletes with rave reviews. Yukon College will continue with an approach focused on customer service and high nutrition.

The Arctic Winter Games will be held in Whitehorse from March 4 to 10th, 2012, during the Yukon College reading week.
