Yukon College staff member joins U.S. delegation on Climate Change

Whitehorse – The Northern Climate ExChange (NCE) has joined a delegation of public sector representatives, traveling in the United States to discuss a spectrum of climate change issues. Community Adaptation Project Manager, Ryan Hennessey, is traveling with Canadian delegates from BC, Alberta and Ontario, who work in the area of policy and research on climate change.
This three week tour involves examining the interests and perspectives on climate change in the United States and the institutional approaches towards environmental governance. “This special invitation recognizes our achievements on an international scale, while providing us an opportunity to continue networking with our colleagues to the south”, says Vice President of Research, Dr. Chris Hawkins. For the next few weeks, Hennessey will be involved in discussions with officials at the national, state and local levels, as well as with non governmental organizations and community leaders on the latest technologies and legislative initiatives on climate change. He will be visiting Washington, D.C., New York, Iowa, Texas and California during the project.
“The past few days of this project have been extraordinary”, says Hennessey. “Meeting with officials from all levels of governance has yielded a spectrum of new information while providing me an opportunity to share our Northern research and the growing experience that Northern people already have with climate change.” says Ryan Hennessey. “This experience has further enhanced NCE’s place as an international player in climate change action.”
This project will focus on the following climate change topics: laws, regulations and policies; strategies to reduce electricity-sector emissions; technological advances in alternative energy and renewable resources; methods used to reduce transportation-sector emissions; financing alternative and renewable resource energy initiatives; the role of civic society in finding solutions; and industry and market adaptation to an environmentally conscious economy.
