Arts Partnership Agreement Renewed

Whitehorse – The Dawson City Arts Society (DCAS), the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation, and Yukon College have renewed their partnership agreement for the governance of the Yukon School of Visual Arts (YukonSOVA) in Dawson  City. The collaborative effort continues with its Foundation Program in the Visual Arts that is transferable to partnering schools Emily Carr University of Art &  Design, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD), and Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD).  The program accepted its fourth contingent of students in September, and graduates of the first year are now completing their final year at the partner institutions.

“We are sincerely pleased with this agreement that commits to our vision of building our strengths and our student experience in a collaborative climate,” says Yukon College President Terry Weninger. The agreement provides students with a unique foundation arts year within a community that is supportive and will ready the students for transfer into competitive national arts programs. “

The Dawson City Arts Society is satisfied with the continued development in the program. "Renewing the Yukon SOVA Partnership Agreement shows the ongoing commitment from the three partners to this remarkable program which continues to attract students from southern Canada as well as the Yukon,” says Karen Dubois, Executive Director of DCAS.

YukonSova receives support through DCAS whose mandate is to support First Nations and cultural arts. The program’s unique curriculum is inclusive of individual and cultural experiences, the environment, the history, and the contemporary culture of both the regional and global perspective. The recently opened facility provides students with classroom space, workspace, resources, and opportunities to exhibit.

The Partnership Agreement signing will take place on Tuesday, October 26. Place and time TBA.
