Wildlife Safety
Yukon University is located in an area surrounded by diverse northern ecosystems and is home to a wide range of wildlife, including bears, moose, coyotes, deer, birds and other species. Wildlife encounters can occur on or near campus, especially during periods when animals are searching for food, shelter, or water.
Most wildlife will avoid people; however, it is important to respect their space and take precautions to reduce the risk of encounters.
Preventing Wildlife Encounters
- Do not approach, feed, or attempt to interact with wildlife.
- Keep food, garbage and personal items secure.
- Dispose of waste properly in designated containers.
- Keep a safe distance from all animals, including animals that appear calm or injured.
- Stay alert when walking outdoors, especially near wooded areas, trails, and parking lots.
If You Encounter Wildlife
- Stay calm and do not run.
- Give the animal plenty of space and slowly move away.
- Avoid direct eye contact with large predators.
- Make yourself appear larger and make noise if a bear approaches.
- Move indoors or to a safe location if necessary.
- Report wildlife sightings or concerns to Safety & Security Services.
Bear Safety
Bears may be present in Yukon, particularly during spring, summer and fall when they are actively searching for food.
- Carry bear spray when travelling in areas where bears may be present and know how to use it.
- Travel in groups when possible.
- Make noise while walking in wooded areas.
- Never approach a bear or its cubs.
Moose and Other Wildlife
Moose are common in Yukon and can become aggressive, especially during calving season or when they feel threatened.
- Keep a safe distance from moose and never attempt to feed them.
- Be cautious around wildlife with young animals.
Avoid blocking an animal’s path or getting between an adult and its young.
Reporting Wildlife Concerns
If you see wildlife on campus or notice a potential safety concern:
- Move to a safe location.
- Notify Safety & Security Services.
- Call 911 for immediate danger.
