Shelter in Place

The purpose of the Shelter in Place procedure is to protect students, employees and visitors by providing a safe location inside a building during an emergency when evacuation may not be the safest option. This procedure allows building occupants to quickly move to a safe area and remain protected until the hazard has passed or emergency responders provide further instructions.

A shelter-in-place order may be issued during emergencies such as severe weather, hazardous material releases, airborne contaminants, nearby threats, or other situations where leaving the building could increase risk.

When Shelter in Place is Required

  • Follow instructions from Safety & Security Services, emergency responders, or official campus notifications.
  • Remain calm and move quickly to the safest available indoor location.
  • Stay inside the building unless instructed otherwise.

Shelter in Place Actions
