Severe Weather


 

Yukon is exposed to a variety of natural hazards that can affect personal safety, campus operations and transportation. Natural hazards include events such as severe windstorms, heavy snowfall, blizzards, freezing rain, extreme cold, flooding, wildfires and wildfire smoke. Although tornadoes are extremely rare in Yukon, strong wind events can still cause significant damage.

Severe Windstorms

Strong winds can develop with little warning and may:

  • Damage buildings, roofs, and power lines.

  • Blow down trees and create flying debris.

  • Cause power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

During a windstorm:

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.

  • Avoid walking or driving near trees, power lines and loose objects.

  • Follow instructions from Safety and Security Services and emergency responders.

During Severe Weather

  • Monitor weather alerts and campus notifications.

  • Stay indoors whenever possible.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.

  • Dress appropriately for cold temperatures and winter conditions.

  • Follow directions to shelter in place or evacuate if instructed.

Extreme Cold

Winter in Yukon typically lasts from October to April and can bring prolonged periods of freezing temperatures, heavy snow, blowing snow and icy conditions. These hazards can:

  • Reduce visibility during snowfall and blizzards.

  • Create slippery sidewalks, roads and parking lots.

  • Cause delays or disruptions to transportation and campus activities.

  • Increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia during prolonged exposure.

To stay safe during winter:

  • Wear warm, layered clothing, insulated boots, gloves and a hat.

  • Cover exposed skin and limit time outdoors during extreme cold.

  • Walk carefully on snow- and ice-covered surfaces.

  • Allow extra time for travel and check road and weather conditions before leaving.

  • Keep your mobile phone charged and carry winter emergency supplies when travelling.

Campus Notifications

During severe weather, Yukon University will provide updates through the Safety and Security Services, email and other official communication channels. Always follow instructions from Safety and Security Services and emergency responders.
