As a Research Professional, you will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of research program areas and projects related to a programmatic area of focus, that align with Yukon University’s Strategic Directions and values, build northern capacity, and addresses northern needs. The ideal candidate will have a relevant degree preferably at the PhD level in a relevant STEM field, combined with experience in the power system domain, gained in an appropriate scientific/technical/professional environment such as a university, research institute, or government department.

If you have strong communication, inter-personal, organizational, problem-solving, critical-thinking, time management, and creative skills, and a demonstrated ability to initiate actions, lead a team and work with minimal supervision please apply. Conditions of employment include a valid Driver’s License, Standard First Aid & CPR (minimum), or equivalent and the ability to occasionally travel to field locations, remote communities across Canada, and conferences.

Duties include:
• Designing specific approaches to support research projects and conducting research activities to carry out those projects (including field, lab, and/or computer analysis tasks).
• Collaborate with technical staff (e.g., Research Analyst or Research Assistant) to complete research tasks such as collection and analysis of data, interpretation of results, and write-up of findings.
• Identify the tools, materials and services required to conduct research activities.
• Contribute to the dissemination of research results through co-authorship of technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, meetings, community engagement, media interactions, and other internal and public communication avenues.

Qualifications:

  • Completed Master’s in relevant field preferred; or Indigenous knowledge keeper of equivalent level as recognized by their community; or completed Bachelors in relevant field and minimum 5 years related experience.
  • Experience conducting relevant research and/or work experience in the electric power system engineering domain.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and their application in a northern, cross-cultural setting
  • Ability to disseminate highly technical results to technical and non-technical audiences

Research experience:

  • Experience supporting partnered research projects with Indigenous communities and governments on research activities.
  • Experience in designing and carrying out complex research projects in an academic environment.
  • Experience creating student research projects, and training and mentoring students
  • Relevant Programming experience in relevant software such as: MATLAB, Labview, and/or Excel VBA, Solidworks, AutoCAD
  • Academic writing experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of government, non-government and academic organizations
